Why Is My Skin So Loose?

Even if you exercise and eat well, there are some areas of the body, like the face, that may need a little additional help. Your face is the first thing people see, and everyone desires to put their best face forward. As you age, the facial contour (jawline and neck) can suffer when skin starts to sag, causing you to look tired, worn out, and older.
At Westport MediSpa, board-certified physician Dana Brownell, MD is devoted to helping women and men look and feel their best. Surgery, such as face lifts are no longer necessary to address sagging skin. Thanks to advances in cosmetic technologies, you can combat the signs of aging and improve your facial contour without cutting.
Ultherapy® is a groundbreaking skin tightening procedure that improves loose skin without surgery. It’s the only FDA-approved noninvasive treatment for lifting and tightening the neck, brow, and beneath the chin. This improves the appearance of droopy eyelids, jowls, loose neck skin, and a hanging brow.
Understanding skin laxity
Collagen and elastin form the foundation of youthful skin. They provide skin support, allowing it to be firm, smooth, and supple. As you age, the body produces less collagen and elastin, and the skin eventually sags. In addition to a decrease in collagen and elastin, the face loses volume, and thinning skin exacerbates the problem. The skin becomes loose from a combination of age-related changes, sun damage, and gravity.
To worsen matters, the fat pocket under the chin is fairly resistant to weight loss. This is why diet and exercise may not remedy a sagging chin.
While skin aging is the primary cause of sagging skin on the face, we also see clients who have lost a significant amount of weight experience skin sagging.
How Ultherapy works
Ultherapy slims, tightens, and lifts in one procedure using the same technology as ultrasound imaging. The machine uses sound wave energy to penetrate the muscle of the area being treated. The device is equipped with a variety of attachments that allow for superficial, medium, and deep penetration.
It causes muscle contraction and shrinkage, resulting in a firming, wrinkle-smoothing, and contouring effect. As a result the face looks smoother, slimmer, and more youthful.
Benefits of Ultherapy
Ultherapy is one of the most unique antiaging treatments available today. Clients choose Ultherapy for its many benefits, including:
- Quick treatment (30-90 minutes usually)
- Zero downtime
- Natural-looking results
- Long-lasting effects
- Completely painless
- Safe and FDA approved
The best part? Ultherapy provides results after just one treatment that can last up to a year or longer!
The Ultherapy process
During the consultation, you will be able to discuss the procedure with Dr. Brownell and learn about what it entails, the expected outcomes, and whether it is the best option for you.
If you decide to proceed with Ultherapy, the treatment will begin with identifying the areas to be treated and thoroughly cleaning the skin. Following that, an ultrasound gel will be applied to the affected area. Dr. Brownell will use ultrasound imaging to determine how deep the treatment should go.
This is accomplished by sending energy waves into the skin, causing a thermal effect. You may experience occasional sensations of heat and tingling during the treatment. Before you know it, you’re ready to head back to work and your regular activities.
What to expect after Ultherapy
The treated area will feel slightly tender and you may have some mild swelling. Some redness immediately following the procedure is normal. The treatment's effects will become apparent gradually over time, with the first changes often visible after just a few days.
As more collagen is produced, the improvements will become more noticeable, with the full results often visible after a few months. Clients love the gradual, natural-looking results!
Because the treatment stimulates collagen production, the longevity of the results is highly dependent on the individual. Some people decide to have additional treatments at a later date to preserve the results.
Am I a good candidate for Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is ideal for men and women in their 30s and later who want to reduce the signs of aging on their face but prefer to avoid surgery. Ultherapy may also be appropriate for people in their 20s who want to reduce the early appearance of lines and wrinkles on their face and chest, as well as men and women of all ages who want to improve skin laxity after weight loss.
Dr. Brownell will gladly address all of your concerns during your consultation and provide her expert opinion on whether Ultherapy is right for you.
