PRFM: Your Solution to Nonsurgical Hair Restoration

Up to 30% of men over the age of 30 and 50% of men over the age of 50, as well as women, suffer from androgenetic alopecia. Platelet rich fibrin matrix (PRFM) is a new hair regrowth breakthrough. By tapping into your body’s own healing powers, PRFM can help restore a fuller head of hair.
Here at Westport MediSpa, board-certified physician Dana Brownell, MD, specializes in aesthetic medicine and is pleased to offer hair restoration with Selphyl® PRFM, the next generation in platelet therapy. Read on to find out how PRFM supercharges hair growth to restore fuller, more youthful hair without surgery.
PRP vs PRFM
While platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses your body’s own platelets to stimulate healing, PRFM takes things even further. Platelets are naturally found in your blood and play an important role in your body's healing process.
These platelets are rich in growth factors that have been shown to aid tissue regeneration and repair. The platelets become highly concentrated when the blood is purified to its highest levels using the Selphyl® PRFM process, providing enhanced rejuvenation benefits
The Selphyl System is designed to make PRFM from a small sample of blood in a safe and timely manner. Through a controlled process, PRP is converted to PRFM, resulting in a structure that protects and preserves platelets. Selphyl PRFM is the PRP of the future.
PRFM superior for hair restoration
Although platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) have some similarities, there are some key differences that make PRF superior for hair restoration.
Both procedures use your own blood, though PRF requires a smaller amount of blood. PRF is centrifuged at a higher speed, causing the heavier blood cells, such as stem cells and white blood cells, to collect at the bottom of the test tube, while platelets and plasma collect at the top. Platelets and plasma are collected and injected into areas where the hair is thinning.
The heavier mix of platelets, white blood cells, and stem cells are more effective. The blood is spun at a lower speed to create PRF so that the layers of the blood do not separate as much. Some white blood cells and stem cells remain within the platelet layer. This makes PRF more concentrated, having more rejuvenating factors than PRP.
Ideal candidates for hair PRFM hair restoration
You're a good candidate for PRFM hair restoration if you're experiencing hair loss. The PRFM's growth factors are most effective when reawakening dormant hair follicles. These hair follicles are still viable and capable of producing hair, but they are becoming increasingly dormant. As a result, PRFM hair restoration works best when patients notice hair loss early on.
PRFM is effective for both men and women, especially those who are experiencing hair loss in the early stages. It also works for women who have traction alopecia, a type of hair thinning caused by hairstyles that place tension on the hair and pull the hair too tightly. It's also a good procedure for people who have thinning hair but don't want to take medications on a regular basis.
What PRFM for hair restoration involves
A small amount of blood is drawn, about the same as for typical lab work. The blood is then centrifuged in our PRFM centrifuge, which runs at lower speeds to keep white blood cells and stem cells separated from blood platelets and plasma. The PRFM is now ready to be injected.
After that, we'll wash your hair and apply a topical anesthetic to keep you comfortable. We also photograph the treatment areas to compare before and after results. Selphyl contains zero additives, making it safe and effective.
Dr. Brownell will inject PRFM into the thinning hair areas of your scalp. These are shallow injections spaced about half an inch apart. You can resume your normal activities or work immediately after the procedure. There’s no downtime required.
